As vice president at the St. Joseph Health System from 1983 until her retirement in 2001, among other things Brewer created a clinical R & D division, founded a malpractice and general liability insurance company, structurally renovated the corporate headquarters, and with others turned around a financially challenged health maintenance organization. Throughout her career she has volunteered extensively at UCLA serving as president of Anderson Alumni, president of the UCLA Alumni, member of UCLA Foundation Board of Directors, and as a University of California Regent. In 2008, she was the UCLA Anderson Alumni Service Award winner recognizing her leadership on behalf of UCLA.
